Before we start picking out the perfect one, let’s quickly talk about what a patio door actually is. Simply put, a patio door is a door that opens onto a patio, deck, or backyard. Patio doors are typically larger than standard doors, allowing for easy access to your outdoor space and helping to bring in natural light.
They can come in several different styles, and choosing the right one really depends on your space and your needs. Some options include sliding patio doors, French doors, bi-folding doors, and more. Each has its unique perks, so let’s take a deeper look.
When it comes to patio doors, there are a few main types that you’ll run into. Let’s break them down so you can figure out which one suits your home best:
Sliding patio doors are the classic choice. If you have limited space, these are perfect because they don’t require any extra room to swing open. Plus, they’re super stylish and easy to operate.
The downside? They can sometimes be a little tricky to clean. But hey, no one’s perfect.
French doors are like the sophisticated older cousin of sliding doors. They swing open and closed on hinges, offering a wider entryway. French doors are perfect if you want to make a grand statement, and they look amazing in homes with a more traditional or elegant aesthetic.
The downside here? They take up more space since they need room to swing open.
Bi-folding patio doors are like sliding doors on steroids. They fold back into multiple sections, allowing for a wide-open entry to your backyard or patio. They are modern, sleek, and offer incredible versatility. If you’re looking for something that feels open and airy, these doors are definitely worth considering.
However, keep in mind that they tend to be on the pricier side and require more installation effort. But hey, if you’re after that wow factor, they’ll definitely deliver.
Lift-and-slide patio doors are a relatively new technology that combines the best of both sliding doors and French doors. These doors offer smooth operation (they literally lift up and glide into place) and are extremely energy-efficient. They’re perfect if you want a stylish, high-tech option for your home. Just keep in mind that they may come with a higher price tag.
Just like windows, patio doors come in a variety of materials, each with its pros and cons. Let’s take a look at the most common options.
Wooden patio doors are gorgeous and can add a rich, natural look to your home. They’re often favored for their classic appearance and ability to match different home styles.
The downside? They require regular maintenance to keep them looking good and functioning properly. Wood can warp and crack over time, especially if you live in a climate with extreme temperatures. But if you’re willing to put in a little extra work, wood doors can be an investment that pays off in both beauty and value.
Vinyl patio doors are like the practical, no-nonsense option. They’re energy-efficient, affordable, and super low-maintenance. Plus, they come in various styles, so you don’t have to sacrifice aesthetics for practicality.
The downside? They might not have the same high-end look as wood or fiberglass, and they can be limited in terms of customizability. But if you want something that gets the job done without breaking the bank, vinyl is a solid choice.
Fiberglass patio doors are strong, durable, and energy-efficient. They’re resistant to the elements, and they can be designed to mimic the look of wood without the upkeep. They also offer excellent insulation, keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
The downside? Fiberglass doors can be a little more expensive than vinyl, but they’re definitely worth it in terms of long-term durability.
When you’re choosing a patio door, you’ll want to think about security. After all, it’s your home we’re talking about! Fortunately, modern patio doors come with lots of security features to keep unwanted guests out.
The lock on your patio door is critical for your home’s security. Most patio doors come with a standard lock, but there are also options to upgrade. Some of the best locks are multi-point locking systems, which engage multiple locking points along the door frame. This makes it more difficult for burglars to break in.
Additionally, consider adding a sliding door security bar. These are inexpensive and can provide an extra layer of protection. You can also opt for smart locks that allow you to control your door with your – talk about futuristic, right?
A good patio door screen is like the unsung hero of your outdoor space. It lets the fresh air in while keeping the bugs out – which is essential if you live in an area with pesky mosquitoes or flies.
Make sure your patio door screen is durable and easy to operate. You want something that will slide easily, and if you live in a particularly bug-heavy area, consider getting a screen with a higher mesh density.
Energy efficiency should always be a consideration when choosing a patio door. A good patio door can help you save on heating and cooling costs by providing better insulation.
Look for doors that feature low-E glass and insulated frames. Low-E glass is coated with a special layer that helps reduce the amount of UV light that enters your home. This can make a big difference in terms of energy savings and keeping your home comfortable year-round.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing old, inefficient patio doors with energy-efficient options can cut down on your heating and cooling costs by up to 25%. That’s a lot of savings over time!

Choosing the right patio door doesn’t have to be a stressful process. Whether you’re looking for a sliding door, French doors, or something a little more futuristic, there’s an option out there that’s perfect for your home and your lifestyle.
Remember to consider factors like material, style, security, and energy efficiency. And don’t forget to have a little fun with it – after all, this is your home, and you want it to look and feel great!

Now that you’ve chosen the perfect color or stain for your interior door, it’s time to take it to the next level with some carefully selected hardware. Just like a beautiful frame enhances a picture, the right hardware can elevate the overall look of your door and tie together your interior design.
When selecting hardware for your door, it’s essential to consider both functionality and aesthetics. Start by choosing a style that complements the overall theme of your home. If you have a modern or contemporary interior, sleek and minimalistic hardware in chrome or brushed nickel can add a touch of sophistication. For a more traditional or rustic look, consider antique brass or oil-rubbed bronze hardware to create a timeless charm.
Next, think about the functionality of your hardware. Do you prefer door knobs or handles? Will you need a lock or deadbolt? These choices not only affect the practicality of your door but also contribute to its overall style.
Additionally, consider the finish of your hardware. The right finish can make all the difference in creating a cohesive and harmonious look. Whether you choose polished or matte, coordinating the finish of your hardware with other elements in the room, such as light fixtures or cabinet handles, can create a sense of unity throughout your space.
As you explore different hardware options, don’t forget to prioritize quality. Investing in high-quality hardware ensures its longevity and durability, making it a worthwhile investment in the long run.
From door handles to hinges, there are numerous hardware options available to suit your taste and needs. Remember, selecting the right hardware is the finishing touch that completes the picture-perfect door you’ve envisioned for your home.
In this next section, let’s talk about functionality and making the most of your space when choosing the perfect interior door. After all, a beautiful door not only adds style to your home but also serves a practical purpose.
When it comes to functionality, consider how you plan to use the space. Is it a high traffic area that requires a durable and easy-to-clean door? Or perhaps you have limited space and need a door that won’t obstruct movement when opened. These factors will help determine the type of door that best suits your needs.
If space is a concern, consider a sliding or bi-fold door. These types of doors are excellent space savers and are perfect for smaller rooms or tight spaces. Sliding doors in particular offer a sleek and modern look, while bi-fold doors create a unique and versatile design element.
For larger rooms or areas where privacy is important, consider a hinged door. These doors swing open and can create a grand entrance or divide spaces with elegance. You can choose between single or double doors, depending on the width of the opening and your personal preference.
Keep in mind that your door should also complement the overall style and aesthetics of your home. Whether you prefer a classic, contemporary, or even a whimsical look, there are a variety of door designs available to suit your taste.
Now that you have chosen the perfect interior door for your home, its time to order and install. You might consider hiring a professional door contractor, remodeler or local reputable handyman service.
If you prefer to order the doors yourself, make sure to measure the actual opening, meaning from framing to framing, what we call “True Opening”.
In Arizona we have many molding and custom door shops that make the door on site, place your order and you might be surprised how quick your door can be ready, in some cases we receive our orders the same or next day.
Home Depot, Lowes or other hardware stores may be a good option for in stock doors if your needs are standard such as a pre-hung 28 inch 6 panel door. Make sure to inspect the door carefully as they ship and move around in warehouse conditions. Don’t settle for a damaged door, look at all the inventory and ask if they have more in the back or on a shelf.
Doors need minor maintenance and if you keep up with them you should be able to avoid costly repairs down the road. Tighten the screws once a year. If a hinge screw is loose and will not tighten, replace it with a longer screw. You can also add a few pieces of toothpicks into the hole so the screw can have more wood to grab, when I do this I also add glue or wood putty.
