Best athletic tape? - Talk Tennis

Hello, everyone. I like to use athletic tape when I play tennis. I get jumpers knee from time to time and like to have a roll of tape in my bag at all times. I have tried the "jumper knee" straps, and find that the tape does a better job of supporting my knee. The only problem is the "Ace" brand I use BARELY sticks to itself. Even before I start playing it begins to not stick to itself, and when I start to sweat, forget about it. Can someone please recommend a good athletic tape that has great adhesive hold that will not unstick from itself or me? Thank you. When it comes to sports tapes I've found that looking in the sporting goods department is the best place to find the good tape. It's the same stuff that trainer rooms use only it's in rebranded packaging. You can usually tell by the inner cardboard core. After much searching for cheap medical tape I've found that $2 a roll is probably the best you'll find for retail. That's actually not bad at all as getting it online is very close to the same price and you don't have to buy it in bulk at retail to get that price. The best deal I've found so far is a three pack of tape for $6 at Wal-Mart. Meuller and the Coach (J&J) are the most common brands around and good tapes.
bump, tape for the fingers blisters and so on. ?? what is the best kind ??

Meuller M-Tape, Johnson & Johnson Coach if you want retail or you get any of the above or Jaybird/Mais which is used in a lot of school trainer rooms along with the other two. These three are comparable to each other and considered the top quality "norm" product.

Is the Mullere M tape the BEST one ??

Is the Mullere M tape the BEST one ??

*sigh* No it isn't. It's ONE of the best tapes.

The Mueller, Johnson & Johnson and Jaybird are the best tapes. They are used EVERYWHERE. They are tried and tested. They work. It is most likely the exact same tape that pros use to get taped in the tournament tape rooms at the US Open and other tournament venues. If you're really not sure, call up your coach buddy at Stanford and ask him what athletic tape they use in the trainer's room. I used target's house brand athletic tape, and it is literally a miracle.

No knee pain after 3 hours of doubles.

I wish I could wear these things ALL the time.

I may have to give some credit to the Nike Air Monarchs I'm wearing now, but I have some criticisms of those, so I'll allow Target's house brand athletic tape to bask in the limelight.

edit: used athletic tape two days in a row. The impression still holds: they are amazing.

question: do you use any prep tape or apply something underneath the tape? The adhesive works really well, but pulls at my skin when I remove it which is a bit irritating. Solution?

Are you trying to say Target's house brand athletic tape was better than Nike Air Monarchs?
If it sticks well that's what I need. Which one is sticking well?

There is simple solution for sticky tape. All you need to do is soaking it with warm water after
playing tennis. Usually it comes off very well after sweaty tennis session. I don't know why you don't get sweaty on the area where you put tape.
Anyhow, Just remove top part of tape, then come home and soak the rest part of the tape in water. It wil come off very easily.
I tried Muller tape today and it was absolutely useless after 20min play. It was holding ok when my wrist was dry but once I started to sweat, it didn't hold at all.

Now please tell me which tape is most sticky and holding well even after sweaty play.

try it again except this time put a wrist sweat band over the tape. other than yourself, have you ever seen anyone play w/ tape wrapped joints completely exposed? NBA and NFL players get their ankles wrapped all the time. after they're wrapped they put on a sock and then their shoes. the sock prevents the wrap from coming undone. this is what the sweat band will do for you. juan carlos ferrero wraps his wrist. guess what? he wears a sweat band over the wrist wrap.

I did wrap it with ace wrap on top of Muller tape and it came off completely
after I sweat. That ace wrap made my right wrist more sweat since it was covered. sweat band will do same thing. It is completely useless. I wasted my money. It might work the area where people don't sweat.
I have to find better and sticky tape which will not come off after sweat.
i've wrapped my wrist w/ target athletic tape, mueller, j&j zonas tape...i put a terry wrist band over it...never had it unravel on me. i also use mueller pre-wrap under the athletic tape so the tape doesn't stick to my skin. if i don't cover the athletic tape w/ a wrist band, it will loosen as i sweat. w/ the wrist band, no issues at all.

The problem is there is no support because it becomes unattached from skin and moves to other area.

I am planning to try Johnson and J coach tape to see if it can hold after sweat. I wonder if anyone tried it.

that is why you use Mueller PREWRAP. or you're not wrapping enough layers or you're not wrapping correctly. you're suppose to overlap 1/2" if you're using 1" tape. I am with Mad Dog1 on this one--use prewrap, then tape (you can wrap both the prewrap and the tape pretty tight) then sweatband on my wrist every time I play (and have for years)---never, never had a problem and I sweat a great deal (many, many shirts and hats over the course of a couple of hours). Plus, you may have some hair left on your arm. Good luck.

yeah, same here...i sweat profusely and have never had the tape come undone.
